RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE FTW!
March 22nd, 2010 at 4:24 pm
hmmmm, quick and a unexpected. Bye Bye Dogbert I had so many thoughts as to your role in this but now you’re ground beef. On we go. Thanks JY
March 22nd, 2010 at 4:59 pm
That kills 3 theories about this comic:
1:Dilberts’s Mouth is sewn shut(although I suppose he could talk via some futuristic voicebox)
2: Dogbert will appear(altough how did he get the lift up there? Blowing up Ratbert?)
3: No rube Goldberg Machines will appear.(actually, that was just me
)
But who’s Boche? Is he referring to the king?
March 22nd, 2010 at 5:21 pm
Such a lovely Heath-Robinson setup.

So I guess Dogbert is NOT in fact secret ruler of the synidicate. Not that I thought that or anything.
March 22nd, 2010 at 5:38 pm
Love that Heath-Robinson machine.

Ah, a classic Rube Goldberg device! With explosives yet!. Question is, how many times will it work? (IE how many cartoon animals are left?)
March 22nd, 2010 at 6:40 pm
This is going to power an elevator?
March 22nd, 2010 at 7:00 pm
LOVE the Rube Goldberg reference! I wondered if you were somehow going to get him in there….

what just happened?
cool to see Dilbert!
March 22nd, 2010 at 7:16 pm
I can’t help but wonder how they replace Dogbert down there…
March 22nd, 2010 at 7:35 pm
I was wondering when the other “berts” from dilbert would make an appearance, and for that matter how. bravo sir.
Rube Goldberg would be proud of this.
March 22nd, 2010 at 7:53 pm
@D Hue: Dogbert, Ratbert & Catbert, you mean
Still no mouth on Dilbert, but then again, he is speaking, so either we just won’t see it (just like the real thing) or maybe a voicebox under the labcoat…..LOL
March 22nd, 2010 at 7:56 pm
Epicosity.
March 22nd, 2010 at 7:58 pm
Dogbert’s too smart to let a little thing like combustion kill him. I’m guessing Dilbert’s killed him tons of times and he’s just found a way to reconstitute himself.
Where’s the World’s Smartest Garbage Man? The other side?
March 22nd, 2010 at 8:28 pm
huh. thought dogbert would’ve faired better off in the chuckiverse. ah well.
March 22nd, 2010 at 8:56 pm
That kills three theories from the last comments section in one go:
1.Dilbert will have his mouth stitched shut
2.Dogbert will appear
3.No rube goldberg machines(well, ok, that was only me)
And who is Boche? Is he referring to the King of Id?

I like Dilbert’s “Mad scientist” look. *thumb up*
March 22nd, 2010 at 10:05 pm
@D Hue: Dogbert, Catbert & Ratbert, actually
March 22nd, 2010 at 10:49 pm
That’s already both the grimmest and most shout-out-filled Goldbergian device I’ve ever seen.
Nothing but neck!

What, no Bob the Dinosaur? I’m surprised that gadget works with just Ratbert, Catbert and Dogbert. Must be a high-efficiency design.
March 23rd, 2010 at 9:07 am
Gotta love Rube Goldberg.
March 23rd, 2010 at 9:31 am
Boche…French derogatory term for Germans, used during WWI & II, means “blockhead.”
March 23rd, 2010 at 10:22 am
Kind of sad, really. Catbert went from Evil Director of HR to just another cog in the machine.
March 23rd, 2010 at 10:27 am
I can just hear , doo doo de do do do do ,doo doo de doo de doo, how ever the old cartoons did the music when a machine worked f n magic
March 23rd, 2010 at 11:28 am
@Richard: \Boche\ was Pruneface’s codename in the old Dick Tracy strips: he actually *was* a Nazi scientist/spy, posing as a seminary student IIRC. Makes sense he’d be tasked to power up this old R&D facility: Worth, Id, and Duke haven’t the tech knowhow, that’s for sure.
March 23rd, 2010 at 11:59 am
Maybe ‘Bert has a collection of cloned Dogberts, so he can have the pleasure of killing that mutt every day. Likewise, he might have some spare Ratberts and Catberts for when the current ones wear out.
BTW, I’m glad to see some cartoon animals who look like cartoon animals instead of deformed humans or hideous mutants. Garf was cool, but the animal characters are among my favorites in the funnies. Will we see Opus anytime soon? Or better yet, the gang from “Pearls Before Swine”?
My general assessment of today’s page: Beautiful. Wickedly beautiful.

March 24th, 2010 at 7:59 am
punx, I’ve looked through your links, but I can’t find anyone from PBS on those pages?
Oh, and that elevator-machine? Incredible! Definitively inefficiency worthy of Dilbert, does Dogberts head even do anything at all that the golf-ball wouldn’t do?
March 24th, 2010 at 8:13 am
@Nightraven & SW: my bad, for some reason when you said PBS, I somehow substituted Get Fuzzy and was pointing out Bucky (or in those references, Buckysaurus Rex LOL)……This is why I ask the question:
Is there going to be an annotation for thew WB Omnibus as I have suggested?
The range of strips used in this tale have spanned across the last 100 years, more or less, and although there are some here who catch the references by and large, most of us (like my Army buddy in Iraq I had a Megaton Pack sent to) don’t, even though that in no way distracts from the awesomeness on display, of course!
I don’t even think there is a limit to what strips JY wouldn’t use, even if he does have to actually come up with an ending, but you’d also have to find a relevant setting, like Dilbert for an R&D facility, Goons from Popeye and B.C. cavemen for Bone City, etc. even if it’s just for a frame or two, like Mutt & Jeff
Captcha can’t remember what political party it is: which primary

screw the shirts. We want WB!
(And I ordered a shirt)
March 24th, 2010 at 11:16 am
FINALLY…been wanting to see Dilbert cremate that canine sack of s**t for some time, and it’s also nice to see Catbert given a significant demotion from HR to “cog in the machine”. Warms my heart.
March 24th, 2010 at 3:24 pm
I’m thinking they must have lobotomized Dogbert and Catbert, or at least the latter. He’s evil enough to lead the syndicate and doesn’t seem the type to just jump at a ball of yard. Ratbert, of course, would be overjoyed to run in a wheel eternally chasing cheese he’d never catch.
March 24th, 2010 at 4:52 pm
I’m still wondering what all this has actually accomplished other than score a buzzer beater.

There must have been something wrong with the system this week. When I posted my response, there was only one other comment, and then mine didn’t show up for whatever reason. I said “oh well” and left, but I suspect a lot of people didn’t, and kept re-posting to try to get theirs to show, and the above mess is the result.
March 25th, 2010 at 7:25 am
Well, there wasn’t too much doubleposting, so it’s not that much of a mess….
March 25th, 2010 at 1:03 pm
Did anybody notice that Goldberg contraption dosen’t actually power anything? Dogbert’s severed head through the bsaket dosen’t cue the lift or really move anything. So, all the machine does, really, is kill Dogbert. Excellent.
March 25th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
I wonder if there will be a super-chilled containment chamber at the bottom of that lift.
It would be a nice homage to Akira.

Made a mistake with the grenade. The spoon should fly off the grenade once the pin is pulled. This would also allow the grenade to roll at least somewhat freely on the ramp, something that doesn’t seem possible as depicted.
