OK, reference roundup time! Panel 1: Google tells me there was a comic strip in the 50’s called Lolly’s Hotel, but that is way, way obscure. Also the one strip I find on the first page of Google’s search result is hella creepy-looking. Panel 2: Montoni’s Pizza of course was in Funky Winkerbean. Panel 3: the shoe in the upper right quarter makes me think of Jeff Macnelly’s Shoe, and the untied lace just about clinches it for me. How’d I do?

Don’t forget Broom Hilda on the far right side of the second panel, what with the apocalypse having given her decimated corpse a Mother Bates vibe.

Wrong on Hilda, wrong on the shoe. (here’s a clue: it belongs to a lonely bachelor). Keep the guesses coming!

The shoe belongs to Jon Arbuckle. The corpse, on the other hand, I’m blanking on. That hat looks REALLY familiar. I’m probably going to kick myself when I find out what it is…

Is the hat-wearing skeleton Chief Redeye?
October 13th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
The behatted skeleton makes me think of the preacher in Snuffy Smith, but I don’t think that’s it either, dammit…

Ooo…nice onew. But no. Think “crotchety old woman”.
October 13th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Is it Li’l Abner’s mother, “Mammy”?
October 14th, 2008 at 12:10 am
If that’s Jon Arbuckle’s shoe mayhaps the big hairy creatures in the previous page are none other than Garfield and friends? Just throwing that out there cause I have absolutely no clue to these classic references flying across here. I did think that the hat beloned to somebody from Snuffy Sniff.

If no one has guessed by Wednesday, I’ll reveal who the mystery corpse is.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
So far, all the ‘cameos’ in this have been from syndicated comics. If you’re taking them from webcomics as well, I’d have to guess that the creature in the previous comic is Dust Puppy.
WB is awesome, btw.

And the mystery corpse is (oh, get ready to kick yourself): Agatha Crumm!
October 15th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Agatha whu-who?!
Okay, let’s defer to Wikipedia: “Agatha Crumm is a Newspaper comic strip created by the cartoonist Bill Hoest (creator of The Lockhorns) in 1977. It was syndicated by King Features. The publication of the strip ended in 1996. The strip was in the ‘workplace’ genre, and the title character was the eccentric, elderly owner of a cookie company.”
By the Lockhorns creator? Whoa, this place really is a toxic dump.
Speaking of which, should Snoopy really be chewing on those bones?

Argh! I didn’t spot the flower on top of the hat! It’s so obvious now!
